I was hiking with a group of teenagers from a summer camp when suddenly we were in the middle of a sunlit wet boggy meadow with raging thunderstorms all around. Truly magical and the perfect color inspiration for the ancient signs of the well and toad. Between each well cross is a toad sign. It’s good luck if a toad lives by your door. Water is the life force and the well is the entry to the universe.
I hand knit these on 5 needles in the round using the traditional twisted stitch technique found in Latvian mittens. Its time consuming, but I just love how it adds texture and depth. The knit wrist warmers then get tossed in with a load of laundry to felt them at 40c and 1200 revolutions. You can continue to wash them in the washer, lay flat on towel to dry.
Knit with local Baltic raised wool spun in Pāce, Latvia where no chemicals are used for washing, just water from the pond. There are still bits and pieces of meadow chaff here and there to prove it.
