Tongariro crossing

I did a lot of hiking, or as the locals say tramping in New Zealand. I am tall, and walk fast, but in New Zealand when a trail marker said 5 hours, or 7 hours they meant it. Thats in a half trot with NO stopping to rest.
The Tongariro Crossing is on the North Island. The bus drops you off at one end and picks you up 7 or 8 hours later at the other end. Reading the signs I realized that stopping for lunch was only possible if I did a bit of jogging to make time.
The trail is across volcanic craters and cones with smoking fissures. Very unearthly, like being on a different planet, but absolutely beautiful.
