I was crazy about horses as a child. I read every single book about them in my school library and even started a horse lovers club. When I found out that there are several herds of wild horses in Latvia I planned a bicycle trip to visit them.

The World Wildlife Fund gives horses to those that want them and have enough pasture land. Foals that are born go back to the WWF, or something like that. This mare is part of a herd at Engures lake. They did not want to let me take the boardwalk to the bird observatory, jealously guarding their stallion. I had to wait until a few more people came, and together we could get through the horse barrier. We all could feel their wildness.
